Spice It Up!

Spices play a very important role in our day to day lives, be its benefits in the kitchen or medicinal purposes. Imagine food without spices- tasteless and dull! In India, due to the diversity in climatic conditions, every state produces some or the other spices. Here are a few things about spices you should know-

1) Chinese 5-spice mix- Star Anise, Peppercorns, Fennel, Cloves and Cinnamon when ground together forms the Chinese 5-spice mix. This mix can be stored in an air-tight container and used as and when required. It gives the food an authentic Chinese aroma and taste.

2)  Depending on the type of spices to be used, choose wisely whether to grind the spices into a powder, use them as a whole or just crush them up roughly! Some spices give out a pungent taste when grated. Spices ideal to be ground to powder are mostly dried spices.

3)  Dry-Frying, a simple method to get the best out of spices. All you require is skills! Preheat a pan on low-flame. Add your spices and keep stirring till they start giving out their fragrances. Avoid burning the spices as they lose their flavours on doing so. The moment you smell the fragrance of the spices, put them off the burner.
